Is advertising for my pole/aerial classes the same as marketing?

This lil post is a part 2 of my series of “Fuckk off with this business language, I just want to get on running my studio and classes.”

Check out this previous post where we dissected Marketing and what it actually means in relation to studios and classes and why it’s actually important.

Today, we are on to ADVERTISING.

I know, isn’t this the same as bloody marketing?

Kinda.

And also not.

Advertising is a part of marketing.

Hear me out.

So marketing is anything and everything you put out into the world, both your current students and your hopefully new students.

Whereas advertising is paying to have specific products or services put in front of an audience that will hopefully buy said product or service.

For us, this would mean paying for a Facebook ad for January beginner courses. Or boosting an Insta post about upcoming taster sessions. Although we can also think of organic social media, emails etc as advertising if they try and get one specific product, i.e. your classes, tasters or courses, promoted.

Hence it is super easy and BTW totally normal to use marketing and advertising interchangeably or not really know the difference although the purpose between marketing and advertising for our businesses is different.

So the questions now are:

How can I advertise best?
Do I have to pay for it?

In terms of investment, no you can advertise for free on social media or via email, or through a referral offer for example. Although paying will increase the likelihood of more people seeing your ad. But that’s a whole other story!

How can we advertise our classes and courses the most effective way?

I know this sounds corny but through a bit of trial and error mainly. Simply by testing out a few different ads and seeing what sticks the most, i.e. got the most reactions and engagement, or people clicking through to the booking system or website. And then building more on those that perform well as these are ads your audience, i.e. your Facebook, Insta and TikTok crew, enjoy the most.

In terms of some practical tips though:

– make sure your ads match your brand theme and feel so they are recognisable

– don’t shove them into people’s faces too much aka book book book as people sometimes get sick of seeing the same stuff

– always state your location in the ad, whether it’s in the text/caption or the actual graphic, this way you avoid people from 120 miles away asking to join

– have a mix of aspirational ad content as well as educational stuff so it shows peeps how you start and what happens form there

– keep the messaging simple and the call to action straightforward.
